UK Gains Access To Ukrainian Battlefield Artificial Intelligence Training Data - Overt Defense -

The United Kingdom has gained access to a database of Ukrainian training data for battlefield artificial intelligence under an agreement between the two nations, with the UK’s Ministry of Defence starting a competition between British companies to develop swarming drones utilizing the data.

Ukraine’s Avengers AI Labs database contains imagery and video gathered by uncrewed aerial systems in Ukraine using daylight and thermal sensors. According to the Ministry of Defence, the UK is the first of Ukraine’s allies to be granted access to the database, which contains over 6 million detections of objects, such as tanks, artillery, air defense systems, infantry, and aerial targets, including Shahed drones and reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles.

The ministry is now seeking proposals from British companies to utilize the data to create AI models controlling “the next generation of battlefield drones”, including swarming drones capable of continuing their mission even when communications and satellite navigation systems are unavailable.

Up to 12 UK companies will be granted access to the database in the initial stage of the competition, with the ministry saying the proposals “must be applicable to both Ukrainian and British defence requirements”. “To advance this work at pace, those companies will be selected in just a matter of weeks and their exploitation of the data is expected to begin soon after,” said the ministry.

I also saw the extraordinary innovation which is allowing them to repel Putin’s illegal and unprovoked invasion,” said Defence Secretary Wes Streeting. “This world-first access to real battlefield data will allow British companies to continue pushing the frontier of defence innovation, deterring our enemies and making us safer at home as well as further strengthening Ukraine.”AI Minister Kanishka Narayan added that the competition was “exactly the kind of practical partnership the AI Taskforce was set up to drive, supporting our ally Ukraine while strengthening sovereign capability here in Britain”.
