Ottawa police investigating apparent sale of missing Trump Avenue sign

Residential street sign went missing 2 days after council vote to rename

First Ottawa city council voted to rename Trump Avenue, then one of the residential street's signs went missing.

Now Ottawa police say they're investigating not only the sign's disappearance, but reports that a Trump Avenue sign was sold on Facebook Marketplace.

CBC News has seen but has been unable to verify a screengrab of a Facebook post advertising one of the signs as a "rare find" and listing it as sold for $700.

Ottawa police told CBC News on Tuesday morning that they're investigating after getting a report from the city on Monday.

The sign's disappearance last Friday came just two days after Ottawa city councillors voted to rename the street, which was named after Trump 20 years ago, before he became president.

Trump Avenue sign goes missing before official name change

River ward Coun. Riley Brockington fronted the motion to change the name earlier this month, saying the American president doesn't deserve the honour in light of his repeated threats to Canada.

Ottawa's Central Park area features other New York City-themed names such as Bloomingdale Street and Staten Way. Among other considerations, a working group of residents will be asked to decide if the new street name should stick to that theme.
