Nigeria’s digital transformation journey and the technology that fuels it
Something exciting is taking place in Nigeria right now. The energy in the air is palpable. The citizens can feel it. I felt it too the last time I was there. A feeling that change is coming, and is coming fast.
It didn’t take me long to trace back to the source of this unmistakable energy. Nigeria is currently undergoing rapid digital transformation—the likes of which have never been witnessed before in the nation. The likes of which could easily catapult Nigeria onto the world stage as a technological powerhouse, if the cards are played right.
What caught my attention in particular were the information and communications technology (ICT) initiatives spearheaded by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy. The part that interested me the most was their mission statement: Aiming to expand internet access to their citizens and also to upskill local talent, incentivizing them to take up jobs in technology.
More than half of Nigeria is currently offline. Boasting the biggest mobile device market in Africa with over 220 million mobile subscriptions, the disparity between the demand for a tech ecosystem versus the available infrastructure is quite glaring. This is where Project BRIDGE comes into the picture.
Project BRIDGE aims to establish a special committee to oversee the massive rollout of fiber-optic cables across Nigeria, in an effort to increase internet connectivity. Close to 120,000km of fiber-optic cable will be deployed across the nation, coming at a cost of $2 billion (mostly through external funding).
In the long run, this is a much needed first step in building a strong foundation in digital infrastructure. What should ideally follow suit is a drastic increase in internet penetration and job creation, as well as an incentive for local manufacturing of fiber-optic cables and other related components.
From my multiple visits to Nigeria—spanning more than eight years—I have determined that Nigeria’s greatest asset is its youth. With more than 50% of the country’s population less than 30 years old, 3.5 million young Nigerians are entering the labor force each year.
Nigeria’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program aims to create a technical talent pool that can not only power their own digital transformation journey, but also position Nigeria as a net talent exporter. This will run as a three-phase program upskilling young learners on multiple verticals such as AI/ML, cloud computing, and UI/UX design, among many more.
Nigeria’s workforce is currently dominated by the agriculture and service sectors. The gig economy also holds a large stake in this, where three million Nigerians use digital ride-hailing and e-commerce platforms to seek short term work. After successful rollout and implementation of all phases, there will be a significant shift in the labor force with technology-related verticals holding a much higher place in the list by 2030. Not only will tech jobs be highly valued, but the local talent will also be ready for it.
Technology that fuels ICT progress
Governments cannot run ICT initiatives on their own, as they rely on the technical capabilities and knowledge of carefully vetted partners. Having traveled the length and breadth of Africa, one thing is certain to me: Your ICT initiatives are only as effective as your partners are capable.
Digital transformation comes with its own set of challenges and risks. Software partners must be capable enough to protect and manage critical digital infrastructure, protect public data, and play a role in critical decision-making. ManageEngine’s ITGOV event, taking place in Abuja on July 15, 2026, provides the right platform for ICT ministers and officials to get to know about world-class software that has the capabilities to drive ICT initiatives and ensure positive outcomes for organizations of all sizes. Onward to a digital Nigeria!
