Mammoth remains exposed as drought saps Danube
Remains believed to have been from a mammoth and a ship have been discovered on Danube river beds.
Levels on the 2,900-kilometer-long waterway have dropped to record lows amid a drought, exposing long-submerged areas.
Bones and tusks were found at such a spot in Bulgaria. Experts say they are probably from a mammoth. They are examining the remains to determine their origin and age.
The Danube also winds through Croatia, where the drought also exposed a shipwreck in the middle part of the river. A local mayor said it is believed to have been a coal transport that sank about 90 years ago.
In Romania, the low levels have led to the shutdown of a nuclear reactor that takes cooling water from the river.
