Inside the Battle of the Accelerators: 5 Key Founder Takeaways

By Emilie Vallauri, Global Program Manager, Techstars

Top startup founders and investors recommend focusing on product defensibility, crystal-clear messaging, and solving genuine customer problems over chasing buzzwords or quick fixes.

We recently packed out Encode Hub in London for our Battle of the Accelerators panel, bringing together founders and investors from Techstars, Y Combinator, Speedrun (a16z), and Entrepreneur First (EF). Moderated by Kateryna Golushko, the panel featured Emilie Vallauri from the Techstars Platform Team alongside Maria Malykh (CTO, Tax Nova / Speedrun alumni), Mariam Ahmed (CTO, Mensa / YC alumni), and Sasha Dutkin (Investor, EF). Together, we pulled back the curtain on how top programs review applications, what building inside a cohort actually looks like, and how to scale long after Demo Day.

Here are the top practical takeaways from the discussion:

An accelerator is an institutional partner and a long-term growth catalyst, not a quick fix. Focus on solving real problems for your users — when your execution and momentum are clear, capital, mentorship, and network support will follow.

A startup community isn't built. It's grown. It's closer to a coral reef than a bridge: reefs form from thousands of small, local relationships over years, none of them centrally planned. You can't decree a reef into existence by writing a bigger check for coral.

At the 2026 Colorado Startup Week, Techstars Founder & CEO David Cohen sat down with PBS12's Business of Colorado to talk about Boulder's comeback, the Give First philosophy, and what AI means for the next generation of founders.

Comparison is stealing your joy: the founder two years ahead of you is running a different race, at a different speed, toward a different finish line, so borrowing their scoreboard to grade your own game only makes you feel small.
