Sparks were flying on Canada Day in West Kelowna.

A grass fire broke out on Bartley Road on Wednesday afternoon that saw a quick response from West Kelowna Fire Rescue (WKFR).

According to the fire department, the blaze started at around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1 and was categorized as Rank 1, burning an area of approximately 100 feet by 100 feet in diameter.

WKFR says construction crews were on site trying to suppress the fire when the first responders arrived at the scene. Firefighting crews responded with two engines, one wildland unit, two safety officers and one command unit.

Eventually, crews were able to suppress the blaze. Hand guards were dug around the fire’s perimeter.

“WKFR would like to remind the public to be extra vigilant in these extremely dry conditions,” said WKFR assistant fire chief Trevor Bredin.

The cause of the grass fire is not known at this time.
