Red tornado warning issued for Clearwater County, Alta.
Environment Canada issued a red tornado warning late Saturday afternoon for Clearwater County, in central Alberta.
Meteorologists are tracking a "dangerous thunderstorm" that might be producing a tornado, and the communities of Rocky Mountain House and Ferrier are currently in its path, the alert says.
As of 5:40 p.m. MT, the storm was 10 kilometres southwest of Ferrier and moving northeast at 20 km/h. Ferrier is just west of Rocky Mountain House, a town about 160 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
"This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation," the alert says.
The storm could also bring damaging winds, large hail and intense rain.
The weather agency advises people to take cover immediately in a basement, "interior room, or sturdy shelter" when this type of weather approaches.
If no shelter is available, people should lie in a low spot and protect their head from debris, the alert says.
