OpenAI Readies Deployment of ChatGPT for 3 Million Pentagon Personnel

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is set to be available through the Pentagon’s generative artificial intelligence (AI) platform, GenAI.mil, in early July, Nextgov/FCW reported Tuesday (June 16).

The reported cited remarks by Mohammed Husain, strategic delivery lead for cyber at OpenAI, at the Defense One Tech Summit in Virginia.

GenAI.mil will make ChatGPT available to more than 3 million defense civilian and military personnel, according to the report.

OpenAI and the Defense Department are working together to make it available across the military apparatus, Husain said, per the report.

OpenAI announced in February that its OpenAI for Government unit would bring ChatGPT to join the other frontier AI labs on GenAI.mil.

The company said this deployment would be part of its effort to help governments use AI safely and effectively. It added that it would deploy a custom version of ChatGPT on GenAI.mil that is approved for unclassified work and runs in authorized government cloud infrastructure.

“ChatGPT is designed to support day-to-day tasks that strengthen readiness and mission execution for American service members, including summarizing and analyzing policy and guidance documents; drafting and reviewing procurement and contracting materials; generating internal reports and compliance checklists; [and] supporting a wide variety of research, planning, mission support and administrative workflows,” OpenAI said in a February press release.

The Defense Department said in February that its partnership with OpenAI marked another step in the rapid expansion of GenAI.mil. The Department added that GenAI.mil surpassed 1 million unique users across every military service within two months of its deployment.

“The platform’s adoption is already accelerating operational tempo and sharpening the decision superiority of its users,” the Defense Department said at the time in a press release. “To ensure this advantage extends to the entire joint force, comprehensive training for all Department personnel will continue, empowering them to effectively learn the platform and integrate AI capabilities into their daily workflows.”

OpenAI said later in February, as rival AI company Anthropic was clashing with the government, that OpenAI had reached an agreement with the Pentagon that would see the company deploy its models on the Department’s classified network with key safety principles in place.
