Japan's Emperor, Empress attend welcome ceremony in Belgium
Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, who are on an official visit to Belgium, attended a welcome ceremony as state guests on Tuesday.
The Imperial couple arrived at the square in front of the Royal Palace of Brussels, where they were greeted by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde.
The Emperor was saluted by the guard of honor. He then inspected the guard with the King.
After a performance of Japan's national anthem, the Imperial couple and the royal couple were photographed together at the palace gate.
Many local residents and Japanese people living in Belgium gathered at the square, waving the flags of the two countries. The Emperor and Empress will attend a banquet hosted by the King and Queen in the evening.
Japan and Belgium mark 160 years of diplomatic relations this year.
