Eritrea's Seare surges to gold ahead of Ingebrigtsen in men's 5km

Jakob Ingebrigtsen was pipped to victory in the men's 5km in a thrilling finish at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen.

African 5,000m champion Dawit Seare found a reserve of energy to pip the Norwegian great and take gold for Eritrea, with compatriot Saymon Amanuel winning bronze.

Ingebrigtsen, 26, was taking part in only his sixth race of an injury-hit season, eight days after he won the 5,000m on the track at the Ultimate Athletics Championships in Budapest.

The Olympic 5,000m champion looked well out of contention until about the final kilometre but powered through to lead, until Seare caught and passed him in the dying stages to win in 12 minutes and 56 seconds.

Agathe Guillemot sprints to gold in women's mile

Likina Amebaw of Ethiopia dominated the women's 5km, just six days after winning $150,000 (£112,000) for victory in the 5,000m in Budapest.

Amebaw was imperious, making an early break to win in decisive fashion in 14:41.

Caroline Gitonga of Kenya was seven seconds behind in second place and Rose Davies of Australia won bronze as Britain's Hannah Nuttall (15:08) came home in 10th.

Germany's Robert Farken takes surprise win

Robert Farken of Germany was a surprise winner of the men's mile.

American Yared Nuguse led from the gun but was caught in the final 100m as Farken won in 3:51.80 for his first major title.

Jake Heyward of Britain was 11th in a personal best on the roads of 3:55.76.

Agathe Guillemot of France won the women's mile in 4:22.74, the fastest time in the world this year on the road, after timing her attack to perfection to beat Freweyni Hailu of Ethiopia.

Kenyan Mirriam Cherop was third with Katie Snowden of Great Britain 16th.

The half-marathon titles will be decided on Sunday, with the elite races forming part of a two-day festival of running in the Danish capital.
