Eastern Shore wildfire remains 'out of control' despite dropping in size

More crews arrive to tackle hot spots ahead of forecasted rain

A wildfire on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore remains 'out of control' despite a downward revision of the burned area, according to the provincial Natural Resources Department.

The department reduced the estimated fire size to under 1,400 hectares from yesterday's 1,700 hectares.

Jim Rudderham, director of fleet and wildfire management for DNR, told CBC News that there are currently few open flames and little smoke due to effective containment efforts. However, extra crew members arrived Saturday, with more possible on Monday, to fully extinguish the fire.

"The fire is still over 1,000 hectares," he said. "The planes help us keep the fire under control, but it's the people [who are] going to put it out, and we will have to bring in more people to help."

No injuries or property damage have been reported so far, according to Rudderham.

Further evacuations are not expected "unless something drastic [changes] on the fire today," he said.

Crews still anticipate incoming weather could help ease the situation.

"The forecasted rain is supposed to come late this evening ... so we're very hopeful," Rudderham said.
