CBC Calgary in the community: Recap of summer 2026 events
From Banff to Sylvan Lake, CBC's communications team visited communities across Alberta
CBC Calgary's communications team has travelled all over Alberta this summer, proudly connecting with communities through event activations and partnerships.
We kicked off our summer with the Canada Day national broadcast in Banff.
The local communications team and CBC Vancouver journalist Gloria Macarenko hit the streets and interacted with the crowd on Bear Street. The team had conversations illustrating a wide range of perspectives from around the world. Many people shared high-energy Canada Day shout-outs and were excited to be featured on the broadcast.
Following the Canada Day broadcast, CBC partnered with the Genesis Centre for its annual Stampede Breakfast. The breakfast, which took place on July 10, is a major event in Calgary's northeast. More than 4,000 people attended this year.
In addition to our activation site, five of our hosts (Jenny Howe and Chris dela Torre (The Homestretch), Paul Karchut (Daybreak Alberta), Angela Knight and Loren McGinnis (Calgary Eyeopener) participated in the event by flipping pancakes at the main grills and connecting with families.
The following week, the CBC Calgary communications team headed to Sylvan Lake to support CBC Edmonton's partnership with the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library. The annual Jaws at the Lake event draws more than 1,000 visitors, and screens the classic 1975 film Jaws for the community on a dual split screen, allowing watchers to view the film as they float along the lake at sunset.
A few days after the Sylvan Lake event, the team headed to the WinSport Event Centre to cheer on the Calgary Surge in partnership with Canada's professional men's basketball league (CEBL).
The game was played on July 21 against the Vancouver Bandits. The Surge secured a riveting victory, keeping the CBC team on its feet and cheering every step of the way.
The CBC Calgary communications team has thoroughly enjoyed supporting events this summer in communities across Alberta, with more exciting events on the horizon.
