Brits Take Home Pair of Titles at J300 Repentigny; Latak Surprises Boys’ Singles Field

It was a successful week for Great Britain’s juniors at Les Internationaux Junior Banque Nationale de Repentigny after half the titles were won by a Brit.

Daniella Britton secured the biggest junior title of her career following her girls’ singles triumph at the J300 event. The sixth seed had to get through a couple of tough matches just to reach the semifinals, winning two of three tiebreakers against Canadian Avery Alexander in round three. Then, the junior world No. 48 came back from a set down to beat 16th seed Nancy Lee of the United States in the quarter-finals.

Canadian Andrea Cabio’s impressive run on home soil came to an unfortunate end in the semis as the Miltonian was forced to retire in the second set against Britton, sending the Brit through to the final.

Britton faced compatriot Hollie Smart for the title and cruised to the finish line, comfortably taking the match 6-1, 6-2.

Cabio’s semifinal injury was enough to keep her out of the doubles final as well. Therefore, top seeds Ilary Pistola and Renee Alame won the title via walkover against Cabio and Camille Allegre.

Great Britain was one win away from sweeping the singles titles in Repentigny, but Rhys Lawlor lost to Marcel Latak of the United States in the boys' final.

The American stunned five seeds en route to the winner’s circle, not dropping a single set until the title match. Latak’s biggest win came against fourth seed Hyu Kawanishi in round two, then he went on to upset Mark Ceban, the fifth seed, to punch his ticket to the final.

Latak lost his first set of the event after being bagelled in the opener to Lawlor. However, the American turned things around and clinched the title, winning 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Lawlor didn’t go home without any silverware, though. He and fellow Brit, Ceban, defeated top seeds Pedro Henrique Chabalgoity and Leonardo Storck Franca 6-3, 6-3 for the boys’ doubles trophy.
