Anthropic IPO Filing Outlines Government Action Risks for Commercial Ecosystem
Governments’ attitudes toward Anthropic and artificial intelligence could affect its business as well as its customers, partners and other commercial relationships, the AI startup said in its IPO prospectus, Reuters reported Friday (Oct. 2).
While companies routinely warn that policy changes could affect their business, Anthropic’s disclosure goes further by suggesting such changes could affect the companies with which it does business, the report said.
Providing examples of how government actions could hurt its business, Anthropic pointed to President Donald Trump’s February order that federal agencies stop using the company’s AI models, the Department of Defense’s designation of the company as a supply chain risk to national security and the Department of Commerce’s imposition in June of worldwide export restrictions on the company’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, according to the report.

Anthropic also said in its filing that government agencies contracts account for less than 1% of its annual revenue, per the report.
Reuters reported Wednesday (Sept. 30) that Anthropic is among the leading artificial intelligence developers that are facing an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission that focuses on the potential dangers AI poses to consumers. The report said this marks the first official U.S. regulatory investigation into so-called “rogue” AI agents amid a wave of incidents in which those agents breached other companies’ systems.
Anthropic was among the artificial intelligence giants that signed the AI safety-focused White House Accord on Super Intelligence on Tuesday (Sept. 29), along with President Donald Trump. The voluntary pledge asks each company to run four layers of controls and audits on its frontier models, including internal evaluations, external audits and review by each company’s board. Axios reported that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei told reporters that the pact was only “a start.”
An earlier report from Reuters about Anthropic’s IPO filing said that the company is creating a Founder LLC vehicle that will be composed of the company’s seven co-founders and will focus on stewarding the firm’s mission even when it conflicts with market forces.
In another report, Reuters said Anthropic’s filing projects $518 billion in spending on cloud, computing and infrastructure needs in the years ahead.
Bloomberg reported Thursday (Oct. 1) that Anthropic is targeting a pre-Thanksgiving IPO at a $2 trillion valuation.
