World Cup safety advice offered by police

Police in Surrey have offered advice for the county's residents on how to enjoy the forthcoming football World Cup safely.

The tournament, which is being held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, runs from 11 June to 19 July.

Due to the time difference, many of the matches will be kicking off late evening in the UK.

A Surrey Police spokesperson said: "If you are watching the matches in a pub, make suitable arrangements in advance for your transport home."

They added: "Book a taxi, stay at a friend's house, or consider being the designated driver."

Due to the late kick-off times, licensing rules have been extended in some venues.

England will play Croatia on 17 June, Ghana on 23 June and Panama on 27 June in the group stages.

The force said: "We regularly patrol venues associated with the night-time economy such as bars, clubs and pubs, and although cases in Surrey are relatively low, we know that some people use the football as an excuse for anti-social behaviour.

"If you know or suspect someone is planning to drive under the influence, call 999.

"And don't forget, if you need to drive the following morning, there's a chance you could still be over the limit."
