Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Maryland Terrapins: News Items and Predictions

It's the first road game of the year, and it's against the Terps. Their QB Malik Washington has made mincemeat of two programs that parallel Techs two opening opponents. Washington is a classic dual threat to both run and pass, but with a live arm. Maryland's defensive line is solid. This is a real challenge, Hokie Nation.

So, the team takes to the road to trundle up to College Park, Maryland… north of the Beltway and smack dab in the middle of the infamous DMV region. We hear that the Terps have a sellout for the game, and that's not common for them. Tech Head Coach James Franklin in his opening week presser requested that DMV area Hokie Alumni purchase tickets and head to College Park wearing white.

It will be interesting to see how many Hokies show up at SECU Stadium to cheer on the Hokies in what shapes up to be a really tough contest of peer programs struggling to regain some relevance.

Actually, it might not be a bad idea to just forget that one. The 2021 Pinstripe Bowl featured a crippled team with J.C. Price as an acting head coach, and almost nothing left in the tank. It was embarrassing but that 6-6 season still beat out the 3-9 fiasco of 2025 under similar coaching circumstances. So, it might be good not to use the limited history between the teams as a judge of current performance possibilities. The teams have only met 32 times in over 100 years, and of that Maryland leads the W/L numbers by 2 games at 17-15. So, really the only thing up on the board for motivation on this one is a measure of redemption from 2021.

The general nature of this one is looking like a low scoring slug fest where neither team dominates the other one and the final score looks more like an old-fashioned football game between peer opponents. Tech is essentially a field goal favorite with a 53 or so Over/Under, and that is a pretty even contest listed for the betting houses.

Tech's traditional problems with dual-threat quarterbacks might come back to haunt them, but the secondary also faces serious challenges because Malik Washington is an accurate passer with a good receiving corps. The Tech offensive line was missing Kyle Altuner in the ODU match-up, and it showed. Though the pass protection for non-running QB Ethan Grunkemeyer was adequate (not stellar, but adequate) the run blocking was barely enough to register positive yardage at the end of the game.

All of this is going to play into the game on Saturday evening, and this is actually the first big test of whether or not the Hokies are going to get somewhere this season, or end up struggling to make a booger bowl.

I am not sure why the Hokies were installed as favorites. I see this game as a bit of a coin flip. The prediction machines are out and like Maryland. Considering Virginia Tech's recent road woes against Power Four teams, I am inclined to pick Maryland. I think these programs are heading in opposite directions, but the Terps are desperate. A win over Franklin and the Hokies will probably buy Mike Locksley another couple of weeks.

The Hokies appeared confident this week. Hopefully, not too confident. The key matchup here is Maryland's defensive line against Virginia Tech's offensive line. The Hokies must be able to run the ball. Having Kyle Altuner back will help. The Terps are big up front. If Tech can run the ball, the Hokies will win.

Ultimately, though, until VT can prove it can win a road game outside the conference, we are narrowly picking the Terps.

Yuck, I despise these sorts of predictions. Do I act the "Homer" and shade the truth, or do I go by my gut feeling and drop a skunk in the wood pile? I don't like how this one is shaping up skill and talent wise. The Hokie O-Line has not completely solidified. It certainly couldn't run block well in the last game, and blaming it on the absence of a tweaked Altuner is lame. The secondary has not been challenged hard, and most coverage has been pretty soft. ODU got away with a whole lot of ridiculous pass catches through the game, especially in the 2nd half.

Overall, I see that the wise guys might have been reading some tea leaves. This could be a John Love field goal in a critical moment difference between a W and an L. On a more sober note, if the Hokies cannot contain and control Washington, it could be a runaway romp for the Terps.

Locksley has a hot seat and a known historic gripe with Franklin. Franklin has a known gripe with Maryland for the way that he parted company with them before his Vanderbilt stint. Coaches' grudges don't necessarily rub off on the players on the field, but sometimes they color the coaching energy coming from the sidelines.

We shall see right after the opening kickoff. The first series for both teams might be very indicative of the full unfolding of the contest. Which is my way of saying it's either Maryland by more than the spread, or Tech pretty much within it.

I'll go out on no limbs, because I am almost always disappointed in the results. Consequently, I'll keep this one within the stated parameters. The Hokies take it in a brawl punctuated by a few flashes of brilliance from both sides.
