Trump: South Korea to invest in Alaska, other US sites
US President Donald Trump says South Korea has agreed to invest in energy infrastructure projects in the United States, including a liquefied natural gas pipeline in Alaska.
Trump made the announcement at the White House on Wednesday.
He said the South Korean government has decided to invest in the construction of a gas-fired power plant in Texas and eight nuclear power plants in the US as well as the Alaska pipeline.
That's the first round of the 350-billion-dollar investments Seoul pledged to make in the US as part of a deal clinched last year for Washington to lower its additional tariffs on South Korean imports to 15 percent.
In announcing the investment projects, Trump was joined by a Republican Senator from Alaska, where tough competition against a Democrat is expected in the November midterm election.
The president stressed that the pipeline investment is "a gigantic win for the people of Alaska."
But South Korean media are pointing to some differences in understanding between the two sides over the projects.
The South Korean government says it is considering the Alaska pipeline project, and a final decision is yet to be made.
