WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump on Saturday announced he is forming an "AI Force" and plans to name an artificial intelligence czar soon.
He also rejected calls to slow the development of the technology.
Trump called concerns about artificial intelligence another in a list of what he described as "hoaxes" promoted by Democrats. He said his administration would not "hinder or stifle" the AI industry’s growth, while using existing laws to address harmful conduct.
Trump described AI as an economic and strategic priority, predicting it could account for "possibly as much as 25%" of U.S. gross domestic product, or GDP. He said the U.S. leads China and countries in AI, adding that he intends to preserve that advantage.
The announcement comes amid increasing debate over the technology’s potential benefits and risks, including job displacement, cybersecurity threats, and the development of increasingly capable AI systems.
Some AI researchers and industry leaders have urged stronger safeguards or a slower pace of development, while others have argued that the U.S. should move quickly to compete with China.
