Three die in Mexico City World Cup street celebrations
Three people have died in Mexico City as locals celebrated Mexico's 2-0 win over Ecuador in the World Cup, authorities said.
A 44-year-old man, a 48-year-old woman, and a 19-year-old woman died from asphyxiation, according to the city's health secretary.
Emergency crews were called to the Juárez area of the capital after three people were reported to be unconscious following Tuesday night's match.
Paramedics, firefighters, and police officers were among the responders dispatched to the scene. The patients received first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation and were taken to hospital for specialist medical care but were later declared dead.
"We are in contact with their families to provide them with all the necessary support," Clara Brugada Molina, the head of the government of Mexico City said in a post on social media.
"With my heart in my hand, I send my warmest regards and my deepest condolences to their loved ones. We reiterate our call to always celebrate with responsibility, care and empathy," Molina added.
Mexico's victory over Ecuador sparked wild celebrations in the Estadio Azteca and across the capital overnight.
Goals from Raúl Jiménez and Julián Quiñones were enough to put the cohosts through to the round of 16, where they are set to face either Thomas Tuchel's England side or the Democratic Republic of the Congo. England and DR Congo play on Wednesday in Atlanta.
Should Mexico progress to the quarterfinals, they'll come up against either Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil or Norway.
