Think AI: how to really use artificial intelligence
Imagine meeting a musician who knows almost every song ever written. Not just rock, jazz, country, classical or pop — but virtually every style, every famous artist, every forgotten melody, every musical theory, and every instrument. If you asked that musician to play your favourite song, they probably could. If you asked them to compose a new one in the style of Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Johnny Cash, they could probably do that too.
Now imagine asking them what they played for you yesterday. “I don’t remember.”
Welcome to artificial intelligence. The biggest mistake people make is believing AI thinks like a person. It doesn’t. It also doesn’t work like Google. Google helps you find information. AI helps you assemble information. That’s an enormous difference.
AI has been trained on an extraordinary amount of human knowledge — books, articles, websites, software, research papers, conversations, manuals, history, science, literature, and countless other examples of how people communicate and solve problems. When you ask it a question, it doesn’t go looking through filing cabinets for the answer. Instead, it draws upon everything it has learnt to build a response that best fits your request.
That response can be astonishing.
It can explain Einstein to a ten-year-old. It can help you write a letter to your grandmother. It can teach you to play guitar, plan a vacation, solve a programming problem, explain a medical report in plain English, or help your child with algebra.
Most of the time, it feels like you’re talking to someone who has spent a lifetime studying almost everything.
But here’s the important part. AI creates the appearance of reasoning. That appearance is so convincing that it’s easy to forget you should still think for yourself.
Sometimes AI is brilliant. Sometimes it’s wrong. And sometimes it’s spectacularly wrong while sounding completely confident.
That’s why the most important skill in the age of AI isn’t learning prompts. It’s learning judgment.
Artificial Intelligence is changing the world at a pace unlike anything I have seen in my lifetime.
I have spent more than forty years working with computers. I have watched personal computers replace typewriters, the internet connect the world, smartphones put a computer in every pocket, and cloud computing transform how businesses operate. Every one of those technologies changed the way we lived and worked.
Artificial Intelligence is different.
This isn’t just another piece of software or another gadget. AI is becoming a new way of thinking, learning, creating, and solving problems. Like every major technological shift before it, those who learn to use it early will have an enormous advantage — not because AI makes people smarter, but because it allows ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.
Every day I discover new ways to use AI, new ways to communicate with it, and new ways it can help with work, hobbies, education, creativity, and everyday life. As I continue to master AI myself, I wanted to share that journey with others.
This series isn’t written for programmers, engineers, or computer scientists.
Whether you’re a student, a retiree, a parent, a business owner, or someone who’s simply curious about all the excitement surrounding AI, my goal is to help you understand it without the technical jargon or intimidating language that often surrounds new technology.
Each article explores one important step on the path to becoming comfortable and confident with Artificial Intelligence. Together they build on one another, helping you move from simply hearing about AI to making it part of your everyday life.
My hope is that by the end of this series, you’ll stop asking, “What is AI?” and instead begin asking, “What can I accomplish with AI today?”
Think of AI as that incredible musician. They know every genre, every chord progression and every style imaginable. When you ask for a melody, they don’t pull out sheet music — they create something from everything they’ve learnt. Most of the time it’s wonderful. Occasionally they hit a wrong note.
Your job is to know the difference.
Thinking AI means changing how you approach knowledge itself. Instead of asking: “Where can I find the answer?” you begin asking: “How can AI help me understand this?”
Suppose you’ve always wanted to learn guitar. Twenty years ago you would have bought a book, searched websites, or watched random videos hoping to piece everything together.
Today you can simply ask: “I’d like to learn guitar. I love rockabilly music. Pretend you’re my personal guitar teacher. Create a six-month learning plan, give me a twenty-minute lesson every day, and don’t move ahead until I’ve mastered today’s lesson.”
That’s a completely different conversation. You’re no longer searching for information. You’re asking AI to become your teacher.
The same idea applies whether you want to learn photography, gardening, cooking, history, chess, French, woodworking, investing, or almost any other subject. AI isn’t replacing your curiosity — it’s accelerating it.
As this series continues, I’ll show you how to ask better questions, how to get better answers, and how to make AI one of the most valuable tools you’ve ever used. But before you learn any of that, you need to change one thing.
You need to stop thinking of AI as a search engine.
Start thinking of it as the world’s most knowledgeable musician — one who can play almost any tune you ask for, but still needs a conductor.
