Taiwan’s Madou region sends third shipment of pomelo to Canada

Latest consignment follows positive market response

The Madou Farmers’ Association has announced the departure of its third pomelo shipment to Canada, according to a Taiwan Times report.

The agriculture and food agency told a news conference in Madou the shipment followed positive market response to the earlier consignments, which together totalled almost 40 tonnes. The new container is expected to reach store shelves in 26 to 31 days.

According to deputy minister of agriculture Hu Jong-i, the Tainan region holds nearly one-third of Taiwan’s pomelo planting areas. And, while production dropped slightly this year, proper field management and post-harvest techniques reduced losses.

He said prices have increased on previous years and pointed out the new technologies adopted by growers’ associations – including cold chain logistics, automated grading and packaging, and sweetness detection – which have helped maintain freshness and quality.

Taiwan has exported a total of 2,139 tonnes of pomelo already this year.
