Switched to summer tires? Look out for June snow on Avalon Peninsula

About 5 cm expected to accumulate in St. John's area

Following a short reprieve from winter weather, the month of June is greeting Newfoundland and Labrador’s Avalon Peninsula with a serving of snow.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the metro region and communities along the coast Monday. Snowfall accumulations could exceed five centimetres in the St. John’s area, while the rest will mostly see rain.

While it may be frustrating to some, late-season snow is not uncommon for N.L. according to Environment Canada Meteorologist Melissa Field.

She said the province doesn’t typically warm up until Mid-June, and people should be mindful of the forecast early this month.

“A lot of folks don't have their winter tires and that sort of thing on anymore. We went ahead to issue that special weather statement just as a little bit of a precaution,” Field said in an interview with The St. John’s Morning Show Monday.

The forecasted combination of snow and rain will build up some slush, said Field.

“It will be a little bit slick in some areas.”

Environment Canada says the snow will end Monday evening before skies clear on Tuesday.
