As is always the case, WNBA players take a risk of injury when suiting up during international competitions. For Seattle Storm fans, their worst fears were confirmed on Thursday when it was announced that Ezi Magbegor had suffered an ACL injury while playing for Australia during the ongoing FIBA World Cup, as per Alexa Philippou of ESPN. As a result, she is going to be sidelined for the remainder of the WNBA season.

Ezi Magbegor suffered the injury during Australia's quarterfinal win against Italy on Wednesday, and the Storm have four games remaining once the FIBA World Cup break is over at the end of next week. Even though the Storm are already eliminated from playoff contention, it's a brutal blow for Magbegor who has dealt with injury issues throughout this season.

Her 2026 season debut was delayed after she suffered a foot injury while playing for Australia in the World Cup Qualifiers last spring. She would miss the first 20 games of the WNBA season, only to sustain a facial injury five games into her return to the court.

Now with an ACL injury, that presumably puts her status for the 2027 season in doubt. Magbegor is in the first year of a three-year max contract she signed with the Storm this past to offseason.

The No. 12 overall pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft, she had been limited to only 14 games this year after playing in all 44 games a season ago. She had been averaging 6.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 blocked shots with splits of 39.8 percent shooting from the field, 30.8 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 87.5 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
