Showers, thunderstorms coming to the GTA this weekend: Environment Canada
Local rainfall amounts could exceed 50 mm beginning Saturday morning through to early Sunday
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for heavy rainfall in the Greater Toronto Area and in Peel and Durham regions this weekend.
In its statement, the national weather agency said local rainfall amounts could exceed 50 millimetres, beginning Saturday morning through to early Sunday.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop over southwestern Ontario in the morning on Saturday. The weather will then shift into the Greater Golden Horseshoe in the afternoon, according to Environment Canada.
On Sunday, more showers are expected to hit east of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.
The slow-moving showers and thunderstorms could cause some areas to receive multiple rounds of precipitation, but rainfall amounts will vary across the region.
"There remains considerable uncertainty as to exactly which areas will receive the highest rainfall amounts," Environment Canada said in its statement.
People are urged to avoid low-lying areas and watch out for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Environment Canada is also reminding the public not to drive through flooded roadways and advising residents that water may pool on roads in low-lying areas.
