Severe storm postpones Canada Day festivities in Mattawa, Ont.

Hydro One says the town's power grid should be restored by no later than 11 p.m. on Thursday

Cleanup efforts continue today just east of North Bay, Ont., following a severe storm that hit the town of Mattawa on Wednesday.

Officials say high winds caused "considerable" damage and forced the cancellation of Canada Day activities.

On social media, the municipality's general manager, Paul Laperriere, said strong winds led to cellular service disruptions and a power outage, which affected more than 1,000 homes.

Hydro One indicates on its website that the power grid should be restored by 11 p.m. Thursday at the latest.

Meanwhile, debris from the storm has closed all lanes on Highway 533 between Main Street and Highway 63. Ontario 511 doesn't say when the roadway will reopen.

Due to the extent of the damage, activities to celebrate Canada Day at the Sid Turcotte Park campground have been postponed until Sunday.

'It is a clear-cut operation': Trees cleared out for lumber at provincial park hit by summer storm

The campground's Facebook page says its beaches, which are typically only available for paid visitors, are open to the town on Thursday so residents without power can have a swim and cool off.

The area is familiar with harsh summer storms. Last year a downburst hit Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park, destroying thousands of trees and damaging hundreds of trailers and vehicles.
