Science, technology, and innovation at the heart of Italy
The strengthening of relations between two advanced and diverse knowledge ecosystems—those of Italy and Australia—was the focus of the meeting between the Ambassador to Canberra, Nicola Lener, and the Australian Minister for Industry, Innovation, and Science, Tim Ayres. This was reported in a statement from the Italian Embassy in Australia. The Ambassador highlighted the numerous existing collaboration agreements between universities and research centers in Italy and Australia, as well as the role played by hundreds of Italian researchers in Australia. He agreed with the Minister on the significant opportunities for further cooperation offered by Canberra’s imminent accession to “Horizon Europe,” the world’s largest research and innovation funding program. In this context, Ambassador Lener also highlighted the existing bilateral agreement on scientific, technological, and innovation cooperation, emphasizing its complementarity with the European program in funding joint projects. Quantum technologies, supercomputing, and artificial intelligence; astrophysics and astronomy; biomedicine and pharmaceuticals; agritech; and Antarctic sciences are among the sectors in which joint research could be further developed, including for their related technological and industrial implications.
