Rare sight on Aussie beach after dramatic weather change
An expert has revealed the real reason why hundreds of waterbirds flocked to a popular stretch of an Australian beach.
Queensland woman, Kerri Schache, said that she watched the cormorants for 20 minutes, telling Yahoo News that, "There was no noise.
They were all just standing there."
BirdLife Australia's Shaun Dooley told Yahoo News that little black cormorants are frequently spotted in large numbers during rain, floods, and even drought.
But he noted it's not the weather influencing their behavior.
Usually, it's because they have congregated around an abundant supply of fish, like a bait ball.
It happens in inland areas during floods or sometimes in drought when fish are trapped in a drying wetland and are easy pickings.
Dooley added, "I suspect here it would've been due to the weather and current conditions and coralling big schools of fish nearby," not so much that the weather itself forced the cormorants onto the beach.
