Prasoon Joshi to chair film study group as I&B ministry clears cinema reforms
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has set up a high-level study group chaired by Prasoon Joshi to review challenges facing the Indian film industry and suggest measures to strengthen the sector.
The decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi on Sunday. Senior ministry officials were present at the meeting, where the minister directed steps to improve film production, distribution and the use of new technologies.
According to the ministry, the study group will include industry experts and technology partners. It will examine ways to make Indian films more competitive in global markets, assess the impact of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual production, and look at access to institutional finance for film production and distribution. The panel will also review difficulties faced by filmmakers in raising funds.
The group has been asked to consult stakeholders across the country and submit its report to the ministry within three months.
Separately, the ministry has circulated model cinema regulations to all state governments to address regulatory hurdles in setting up theatres. Regulation of cinemas falls under the state list, and differing approval norms across states have affected the growth of cinema infrastructure, particularly outside large cities.
The model rules, drafted after consultations with stakeholders, aim to simplify permissions and speed up the expansion of cinema screens. States have been requested to consider adopting the framework, with the ministry offering support for implementation.
