Perfect scores produce two compound match world records at Aichi-Nagoya

Two new match world records have been set in compound competition at the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, with 14-year-old Korea archer Kang Yeonseo becoming the first under-18 women’s archer to shoot a perfect score in a 15-arrow match.

Korea’s Park Jungyoon and Choi Yonghee had already set a new world record in the compound mixed team match on 27 September, shooting 160 points from 16 arrows with 11 Xs, the X-ring being the central zone within the 10-ring used to break ties in qualification and when certain world records reach their maximum points score.

Their score matched the previous world record of 160, set by Türkiye’s Hazal Burun and Batuhan Akcaoglu at the Shanghai 2025 Hyundai Archery World Cup. Korea’s 11 Xs, however, surpassed Türkiye’s previous mark of 10.

The performance came during a remarkable round of 16, with India and Kazakhstan also shooting perfect 160s, although both recorded fewer Xs.

A day later, 14-year-old Kang Yeonseo produced another milestone, shooting a perfect 150 from 15 arrows, with six Xs, in the compound under-18 women’s match. This record is still pending ratificatio by World Archery.

Her score improved a world record that had stood since 2021, when USA’s Zoie Thompson scored 149 at the Buckeye Classic in Dublin, Ohio.

Kang has already made her mark on the senior international circuit in 2026. She made her World Cup debut this season and helped Korea win compound women’s team bronze at the Madrid stage alongside Park Jungyoon and Park Yerin.

World Archery had previously highlighted Kang’s selection for Korea’s 2026 national squad at just 14, making her the first middle-school student selected to the team.

The two records add to a strong opening to the archery competition at the 20th Asian Games, where 214 athletes from 29 countries are competing across 10 medal events.
