OIC Participates in World Artificial Intelligence Conference and High-Level Meeting on AI Governance in Shanghai

The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) took part in the World Artificial Intelligence Conference and the High-Level Meeting on AI Governance held in Shanghai from 17 to 20 July 2026.

Representing the OIC General Secretariat, *Mr. Abdunur M. Sekindi, Director General of the Science and Technology Department*, joined policy makers, heads of international organizations, and leaders from academia and industry to discuss the future of artificial intelligence governance.

The opening ceremony was attended by heads of state and government, including *H.E. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China*, along with leaders from Kazakhstan, Cambodia, the United Nations Secretary-General, and other distinguished guests.

On the sidelines of the Conference, Mr. Sekindi held productive meetings with heads of delegation and senior Chinese officials. The discussions focused on how the OIC can contribute to the development of an *equitable, safe, inclusive, and people-centered global AI governance framework* that reflects the values and priorities of OIC Member States.

As part of this engagement, Mr. Sekindi held consultations with representatives of the *Arab League, the African Union, and the Gulf Cooperation Council* to benchmark experiences and best practices. The aim is to inform the development of the *OIC AI Vision*, which is currently under preparation by the General Secretariat.

Speaking during the engagements, Mr. Sekindi reaffirmed the OIC’s commitment to ensuring that AI development and governance serve humanity, bridge the digital divide, and promote cooperation among Member States in science, technology, and innovation.

The OIC’s participation underscores its determination to play an active role in shaping international dialogue on AI, while ensuring that the perspectives of the Islamic world are reflected in emerging global standards and policies.
