NWACC, MIT program collaborate on artificial intelligence curriculum

Representatives of NorthWest Arkansas Community College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Pathways for AI Training and Hiring program met for two days in Bentonville recently to explore developing artificial intelligence curriculum for professional skills training.

The representatives jointly hosted area business leaders and stakeholders to identify AI skill needs and guide program design across retail, logistics, robotics and healthcare. Guests from each industry took part in discussions and workshops to identify challenges and needs to help guide the design of new professional skills training, microcredentials, badges, certificates and program pathways.

According to a news release, the collaboration between NWACC and MIT PATH can serve as a model for how higher education institutions can accelerate AI literacy and adoption.

“NWACC proudly serves as the region’s leader in AI education and workforce development,” NWACC President Dennis Rittle said. “We are thrilled to collaborate with the PATH team from MIT, which has a world-renowned reputation in academia and for producing distinguished careers, to help further prepare the Northwest Arkansas workforce for the AI economy.”

The MIT PATH program is a workforce development initiative designed to help learners — regardless of background — secure jobs in the growing AI economy. MIT, in collaboration with Georgia State University, recently expanded work under the multi-year program “with a particular focus on transforming community colleges into engines powering an AI-enabled workforce for the nation,” according to a news release.

“In the AI era, economic opportunity and mobility will hinge on whether people build practical, industry-relevant AI skills and mindsets — not just familiarity with the tools,” said Cynthia Breazeal, MIT PATH principal investigator. “That means pairing hands-on, work-based learning with solid technical grounding and the responsible design, professional and human skills employers want.”
