N.S. boating accident leaves 1 man dead, another missing

Two men have died in a Canada Day boating accident on Aylesford Lake in Nova Scotia’s Kings County, according to RCMP.

A 70-year-old man was pronounced dead on Wednesday at the scene, while the body of the second man was recovered the next day following a search by various agencies.

First responders, including the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), responded to the incident at around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.

It was reported that people had been ejected from a boat on the lake.

“Officers learned five men from Kings County were in a boat when two passengers were thrown from the vessel as the surface conditions of the water changed,” RCMP said in a release.

According to police, the 70-year-old man, who was from Aylesford, N.S., was found in the water by a separate and uninvolved boater. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The search for the second person, a 58-year-old man also from Aylesford, continued Thursday with assistance from JRCC, Valley Ground Search and Rescue, and Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA).

An update at around 3:30 p.m. from RCMP said the missing boater was found deceased.

“Our thoughts are with both men’s loved ones at this difficult time,” RCMP said.

Police said the three other men on the boat were uninjured. The investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, RCMP are also investigating another fatal boating incident in the province. A 24-year-old from Wallace, N.S. died after being thrown from a boat that ran aground near Oak Island in Cumberland County on June 30.
