Nobel Peace Prize live: Navi Pillay wins for 'efforts to promote peace and international law'
Navi Pillay has been named the 2026 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize - here's what you need to know.
Who is she? Pillay is a former UN high commissioner for human rights who began her work during the apartheid era. She became the first non-white woman in South Africa to establish her own law practice and now, aged 85, sits as a judge in the International Court of Justice.
Why has she won? The Norwegian Nobel Committee said she has won the award for "her efforts to promote peace and international law" and praised her for showing that legal measures can help prevent acts of war and violence".
What has she said? Pillay was pulled out of a meeting in Nuremberg to be told she had won the Nobel Peace Prize. "It must be a joke," she said in an impromptu speech to colleagues. Speaking to the press later, she said she was still "reeling with surprise" and dedicated the award to "all the survivors of international crime".
