Newcastle news: Wissa and Elanga contribute to Premier League World Cup dominance

There is a wider picture of Premier League dominance at the World Cup. A total of 182 players connected to Premier League clubs - including returning loanees and players already signed before the 2026-27 season - were selected for the tournament, comfortably more than any other domestic league.

Restricting the count to players who ended last season registered with Premier League clubs still leaves an unrivalled total of 154.

Across world football, only players from Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain have scored more goals than Crystal Palace and Sunderland's seven during the tournament so far.

Three clubs are tied next with five goals, including Newcastle United, thanks to Yoane Wissa's three goals for DR Congo and Anthony Elanga's two for Sweden.

Arsenal's contribution comes courtesy of Kai Havertz (Germany) and Leandro Trossard (Belgium), who have both scored twice, alongside Viktor Gyokeres (Sweden).

Manchester United's Matheus Cunha has three goals for Brazil, with Marcus Rashford (England) and Amad Diallo (Ivory Coast) also getting on the scoresheet.
