NATO seeks to strengthen eastern border with drones and artificial intelligence

NATO wants to strengthen its eastern border using drones and artificial intelligence, Deutsche Welle reports.

The plan includes an Eastern Flank Deterrence initiative designed to monitor threats along the borders with Russia and Belarus. The system will cover an area stretching from northern Finland to the Black Sea.

The concept is designed to detect potential incursions into allied territory and repel attacks on the first line of defence.

US Army Major Ben Schiff, the officer responsible for operations under the programme, said artificial intelligence was necessary because NATO does not have enough personnel to operate one million drones simultaneously.

At the same time, NATO is using the operational situation in Ukraine to develop military plans for a possible future confrontation in Europe.
