'Mirzapur: The Movie' may rewrite the rules of entertainment
The coming of Mirzapur to theatres is a full-circle moment for the Hindi entertainment industry, which spent most of the last decade convincing itself and everyone else that streaming was, in fact, the future. At a time when the boundaries separating formats and screens are increasingly blurring, this was only inevitable. That a blockbuster series outgrows the confines of its origins and steers towards the biggest canvas possible.Directed by Gurmeet Singh, the film is set around the time played out in the first season. Except for Vikrant Massey, all major actors reprise their roles. Massey has notably been replaced by Panchayat’s Jitendra Kumar, who will be seen in the film as Guddu’s younger brother Bablu, the brains that power his brawn. However, contrary to popular posturing, Mirzapur is not the first instance when a long-running popular show decided to be more and dared to demand appointment viewing and payment per experience, the exclusive hallmarks of the theatrical experience. Within the Hindi entertainment landscape alone, Khichdi, Office Office and Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hain have all tried to put to test if they could convince their large audiences to leave their homes for a more immersive experience. They couldn’t. According to Box Office India, Chala Mussaddi... Office Office, the 2011 film headlined by Pankaj Kapur, which aimed to further expand the rich universe of the social satire, managed to rake in an abysmal ₹1.04 crore against a ₹6.5 crore budget.Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain! Fun on the Run, which released earlier this year, met a similar fate. Mounted on a reported budget of ₹10 crore, the comedy drama collected a paltry ₹1.45 crore (India net). The two Khichdi films—released in 2010 and 2023—also failed to make an impact at the box office. Together, both the films made a reported total of ₹11.5 crore against a collective estimated budget of ₹19.5 crore. Also Read: Uttam Kumar at 100: The eternal Mahanayak who defined Bengal’s cinematic soulWith Mirzapur, however, it’s different. The saga of heartland violence and power play in Purvanchal has five key factors working wonders for it that Khichdi, Office Office and Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain lacked entirely. It has the contemporary grammar of the event film, an innate franchise-able quality, a major movie studio backing it, and an array of credible/popular film actors in key roles. Moreover, Mirzapur has always existed in that highly elusive, enviable space that transcends streaming and is closer to quintessential mainstream masala Bollywood. The world of Mirzapur, therefore, lends itself organically to the silver screen. It is tailor-made for theatrical entertainment. Add to it the immensely quotable dialogues, meme-able moments, explosive recall value and delightfully fleshed out characters that have dominated cultural conversations ever since the first season premiered eight years ago.The pull of Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit, Munna Bhaiya and sundry, especially in the India that stretches endlessly beyond its metropolises, is so potent that the film is eyeing a ₹25 crore opening. For context, that’s bigger than some of the biggest in recent times. If it matches expectations, Mirzapur will beat Awarapan 2 and Saiyaara. As I am writing this, the shows are filling fast, and the ticket prices are soaring, courtesy the bullish demand. Today, as traditional power structures shift, a circulatory entertainment model has emerged in which theatres and streamers are no longer in competition but are complementary to each other instead. Where a story is conceived doesn’t matter as much anymore. Who is telling it, how they are telling it and how the audience is responding is what has begun to make all the difference.Mirzapur: The Movie is also the result of impeccable timing. Violence and vulgarity on screen have been selling quicker than protein for a while now. What better time to cash in on an existing IP, jump across timelines to tell the same story again with the audience already in on what awaits. This is classic franchise storytelling but with an edge. It’s no longer as straight and banal as OTT to theatre. The universe of Mirzapur is expanding in more of a comic-book fashion. The film doesn’t begin where the last season left us. It exists in a timeline parallel to or earlier than season 1, introduces more characters, points of view, resurrects the dead, and heightens chaos. As long as Mirzapur: The Movie does not behave like an expensive, overblown episode offering more of the same, we may be onto something. Also Read: A ₹2 crore indie devotional film is on track to become one of the biggest blockbusters of 2026Continue Reading(Edited by : Asmita Pant)
