June business news, Texas Tech series make Lubbock headlines

This week was on the lighter end, probably because of the holiday, so we just have two highlights: June business roundup and the announcement of a Texas Tech football docuseries.

The Texas Tech football docuseries will be produced by Skydance Sports and show on Paramount+. It has been filming the Red Raiders since January, when the off-season began after the Orange Bowl.

"This documentary will give the Red Raider Nation an inside look at everything that makes Texas Tech Athletics special, the people, the passion, and the relentless pursuit of excellence that defines this program every day,” said Kirby Hocutt, Director of Athletics at Texas Tech University. “We are incredibly proud that Paramount+ selected Texas Tech for a groundbreaking documentary with rare access.”

This announcement came after months of the university undergoing controversy, from the Brendan Sorsby betting situation to censorship concerns.

June as a whole seemed to be slow for business expansion, but there were at least 11 announcements, including the opening of Critical Whiskers and the closing of Shaq's Big Chicken restaurant. A reader also reached out to me about the closures of all Battery Joe's in town. Owners were not reachable, but it appears the regional chain's three locations in Lubbock - along with locations in Midland, Abilene and Amarillo - have been closed for at least a month.

As always, thank you for reading and supporting the A-J.
