LANGLEY ADVANCE TIMES – Langley Township’s annual free family Canada Day event this year will see the return of fireworks, after two years of lighted drone displays.

The festivities take place at McLeod Athletic Park at 5678 216 St., running from noon to 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1.

The event will be fairly similar to last year’s, with a few tweaks, said Kevin Muirhead, manager of parks services and events for the Township.

One of the biggest differences people will notice is that they’ll be able to get out of the sun.

“There will be a lot more shade on site this year,” Muirhead said.

A large shade tent and some smaller covered areas will be added to let people get out of direct sunlight.

The biggest alteration, however, is the return of fireworks. For the last two years there have been drone shows instead of the traditional fireworks, but last year the Township council voted to return to firework displays.

The fireworks start at 10:15 p.m. and will last about 15 minutes, closing out the day, Muirhead said.

They will be synchronized to music. Those who have sensitive ears can listen to the music through noise-cancelling headphones by downloading an app from the Township’s website. Visit www.tol.ca/en/arts-culture/canadaday.aspx to find the QR code for the app.

There will also be glow wands for sale for $5 on site, Muirhead noted.

The events and attractions include:

• A Kids Zone with multiple attractions, including bouncy castles and a rock wall

• A Family Fun Hub with face painting and mini-golf, among other options

• A food and beverage zone with food trucks

The event is usually a pretty big hit, with between 20,000 and 25,000 visitors last year.

There will be parking nearby, but that may fill up. The alternative way to get to the event is by parking at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University campus on the Langley Bypass, and then taking a free shuttle to McLeod Athletic Park. The shuttles run every 20 minutes beginning at 11:45 a.m., and parking at the KPU lots will be free all day.

The shuttles will pick up passengers at the roundabout in front of the KPU courtyard, and drop them off in front of Langley Secondary School on 56 Avenue, beside McLeod Athletic Park.

There will also be a bike valet for cyclists in front of the main event entrance. Riders are asked to bring their own locks.

Leashed pets are welcome at the event, but visitors are asked to pick up after them.
