DPIIT-recognised startups cross 2.4 lakh as India adds 16,334 in Q1

India added 16,334 startups to its recognised ecosystem in the first quarter of this fiscal, taking the total of such companies recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to more than 2.4 lakh as of June 30, the Lok Sabha was told on August 11.

The figures were shared by minister of state for commerce and industry Jitin Prasada in response to a question on startup registration, investment and compliance.

The minister said startup recognition has been progressively simplified and digitised through the Startup India portal and the National Single Window System (NSWS), with online applications, self-certification, simplified documentation and real-time tracking.

The latest addition represents continued expansion of India's formal startup base. The government said the number of recognised startups stood at 2,40,092 at the end of June, with 16,334 entities receiving recognition between April 1 and June 30.

The reply also provided fresh first-quarter figures on startup funding under the government's Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS).

Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) supported under the first Fund of Funds have invested Rs 27,902.7 crore in 1,460 startups as of June 30. During the June quarter alone, investments of Rs 921 crore were made in 33 startups.

The minister also said the government has operationalised the Rs 10,000-crore Startup India Fund of Funds 2.0 in April 2026.

The second fund is intended to mobilise venture and growth capital through SEBI-registered AIFs, with dedicated categories for deep-tech, micro venture capital and manufacturing-focused funds.

The response revealed that the government's broader Regulatory Compliance Burden initiative has resulted in more than 47,865 compliances being reduced across central ministries, departments and states or Union Territories.

Of these, 16,136 compliances have been simplified, 22,289 digitised and 5,170 decriminalised, while redundancy has been removed in 4,270 cases.

The government has also expanded startup recognition criteria this year, including raising the annual turnover ceiling for recognised startups from Rs 100 crore to Rs 200 crore and introducing a separate Deep Tech Startup category with eligibility extending up to 20 years from incorporation and a turnover ceiling of Rs 300 crore.

The minister said these measures were intended to improve ease of doing business, reduce compliance burdens and strengthen the environment for investment and innovation.
