Cursor Prepares Workplace AI Agent to Challenge Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work

Cursor, which has offered coding-focused tools since its founding in 2022, is developing a general-purpose AI agent that would compete with Anthropic’s Cowork and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work, The Information reported Thursday (July 9), citing unnamed sources.

The artificial intelligence agent, which is internally referred to as Sand, would respond to emails or texts, organize spreadsheets and handle engineering work, according to the report.

Reached by PYMNTS, Cursor declined to comment on the report.

According to The Information, Cursor is adding the personal assistant to diversify the company’s offerings and reach business users who aren’t developers. The AI agent could also support the enterprise business of SpaceXAI, the AI unit of SpaceX, which plans to acquire Cursor and close the acquisition in the second half, per the report.

At the same time, it’s not certain that Sand will make it to market. Cursor has not yet determined whether to launch the agent, and the company’s product roadmap could be affected by the pending merger with SpaceXAI, the report said.

SpaceX announced in June that it would spend $60 billion to acquire Cursor and that it expected the all-stock transaction to close in the third quarter. The company said the acquisition is designed to help SpaceX build “the world’s most useful” AI models.

The deal followed a partnership between SpaceX and Cursor that was announced in April, with Cursor writing on its blog that the collaboration would help accelerate Cursor’s model training efforts.

Prior to the announcement of the planned acquisition, it was reported in March that Cursor was seeking a valuation of $50 billion from a planned funding round. Earlier, the company was valued at $29.3 billion in a November 2025 funding round in which it raised $2.3 billion. Before that, it was valued at $9 billion in a May2025 funding round in which it raised $900 million.

According to the March report, Cursor is one of the fastest-growing startups ever and a key player in the vibe coding space amid demand from software developers for coding tools.

OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT Work Thursday (July 9), saying it’s an agent in ChatGPT that is designed for work that is more complex than a typical chat request.

Anthropic launched Cowork in January, describing it as a hands-on collaborator across a user’s desktop, and began making this agentic experience available on mobile and web Tuesday (July 7).
