Child killer Allan Schoenborn granted conditional discharge by B.C. Review Board

The British Columbia Review Board has granted a one-year conditional discharge for a man convicted in the brutal slayings of his three children.

Chairperson Geneviève Boudreau says Allan Schoenborn must attend a psychiatric clinic for treatment, live at a supervised place and return to the forensic psychiatric hospital in Coquitlam if ordered to do so by the board.

Schoenborn must also report any intimate relationships, remain on good behaviour and not possess or use any weapons or drugs.

In 2010, Schoenborn was found not criminally responsible for killing his three children, aged five, eight and 10 in their Merritt home in 2008.

In 2021, Schoenborn legally changed his name to Ken John Johnson, a move that led the B.C. government to pass laws preventing those convicted of serious crimes from changing their names.

The board’s disposition says that Schoenborn’s discharge will be up for review in a year.

Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West told Global News that this is “one of the most appalling decisions that has been made and it will rightfully create a lot of outrage in this province and quite frankly should across the country.”

“We are talking about one of the most heinous crimes; I can’t even get my head wrapped around it, it’s hard to even say the words as a dad.

“This is someone who killed their own children, three young children, killed in the most brutal sadistic way and we need to recognize, whether some people like it or not, that there are individuals who do not deserve to be in public, do not deserve the freedom to walk the streets and if this type of crime doesn’t warrant that then I don’t know what does.”
