1Password's New Claude Integration Lets the AI Platform Log In for You
Late last week, 1Password introduced a unique integration with Claude that lets the AI sign in to third-party websites using your stored credentials. The integration is said to be able to do this without seeing your passwords or OTPs.
Claude triggers 1Password when you give it a prompt that requires a third-party account to fulfill. (In 1Password's example above, the user asks Claude to buy an audiobook on Audible.) The chatbot then requests a specific set of credentials from 1Password, then fills in your username, password, and/or OTP.
"Claude controls the web browser and navigation, but 1Password controls the autofill," a 1Password staffer says in a YouTube demonstration. "The agent never sees my password or my one-time code."
1Password says passwords and OTPs stay encrypted in the vault and never enter Claude's context or Anthropic's servers. It also checks for and removes credentials if a site displays them in plain text after submission, as reported by 9to5Mac.
This integration, called 1Password for Claude, allows you to control which accounts Claude can use for prompted tasks. Access to your 1Password vault is limited to active tasks and ends as soon as Claude is done, precluding the AI from keeping long-term access to the vault.
Right now, the integration works with Claude paid plans on macOS using the Claude desktop app and a Chrome extension, plus a 1Password subscription with its own app and Chrome extension. For now, the integration doesn't seem to be compatible with other web browsers, and neither Anthropic nor 1Password has said whether it will come to Windows PCs.
