15 Shows and Movies to Watch This Weekend
From the American Music Awards on CBS to 'The Boroughs' on Netflix
Yes, there are a lot of streaming services, and, yes, there's a lot of buzz around the latest releases. But just because something's trending or on lists of most-viewed titles doesn't mean it's always worth a watch.
Last month, April gave us nine must-watch shows (like BEEF season two and Love on the Spectrum season four). And now, May is going strong with even more great content (like Citadel season two).
Allow me, an entertainment editor, to help you parse through it all with shows and movies that are actually worth watching this week. I'm talking star-studded award shows like the American Music Awards, buzzy new movies like The Mandalorian and Grogu and exciting new series like The Boroughs. Enjoy the best selections (recommended by yours truly) on Netflix, HBO, in theaters and more.
From The Chi season eight to Couples Therapy season five, here's what to watch this weekend.
This Monday night, icon Queen Latifah is hosting the 52nd American Music Awards—and PureWow will be there reporting live. The lineup of performers is stacked and includes BTS (in their first award show performance in four years), New Kids on the Block (my inner '80s baby is freaking out), Teyana Taylor (she really can do it all) and Sombr (who I'll try not to mistake for Timothée Chalamet on the red carpet).
This new sci-fi thriller with a sense of humor has my name written all over it. It comes from the Duffer Brothers (aka the creators of Stranger Things) and follows Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Bill Pullman and Jane Kaczmarek in a retirement community where something sinister (think: scary monster) is lurking beneath the surface.
3. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu
Space movies aren't usually my jam unless they star Ryan Gosling and an adorable rock alien. But I'm willing to make an exception for one that stars Pedro Pascal and an adorable Grogu instead. (Throw in Sigourney Weaver and I'm fully sold.) This big budget addition to the famous franchise features an offbeat duo out to fight the space bad guys. Groundbreaking? No. A fun watch? For sure.
Would I have thought to pair Borat himself Sacha Baron Cohen with Oscar-nominee Rosamund Pike in a Netflix movie? Probably not, but I guess that's why I don't work in casting. Here, Cohen plays a ladies man who wakes up—and gets a wake-up call—in an alternate reality where women fully dominate work and society.
This fun satire pits Keke Palmer, a shoplifter who "boosts" high fashion items, against Demi Moore, a fashion mogul who wants to squash the boosters (and isn't afraid to steal their clothing designs in the process). It's camp, it's commentary and, yes, it has a whopping 92 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes so I'll definitely be grabbing a ticket.
It's officially season five of this controversial reality series where real-life couples sit down for therapy sessions with Dr. Orna Guralnik—and a camera crew. Similar to shows like 90 Day Fiancé, audiences are fully divided over whether they hate to watch it or love to hate-watch it. Either way, this iteration features four new couples, and one of them has a secret involving paid cuddling sessions. Pass the popcorn!
Speaking of trashy/enjoyable reality TV, Summer House fans are going to love binging this brand-new spinoff, In the City. Kyle, Amanda and Lindsay take their drama to the big city (Manhattan), but the "plot" mostly revolves around the Amanda-Kyle breakup. New episodes hit Bravo every Tuesday.
It's the end of an era as The Chi (from creator Lena Waithe) arrives for its eighth and last season. After a shocking season seven murder (if you don't know yet, time to start catching up...), two of our faves (no spoilers here) are arrested...since they were, ya know, found at the crime scene and all. This coming-of-age show about residents of the south side of Chicago first aired in 2018 and has since become the longest running Black TV drama ever.
If you've finally given up on Grey's Anatomy (you're forgiven, it's been 22 years), this four-season medical drama might offer you some fresh faces and storylines. SkyMed follows nurses and pilots on air ambulances, as they perform high-stakes—and high-altitude—rescues in the Canadian wildnerness. It's the personal drama of Grey's but with more bear attacks.
10. Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed
Everyone's favorite Orphan Black and She-Hulk star Tatiana Maslany returns with a brand-new dark comedy on AppleTV. The show's description reads, "A newly divorced mom falls down a dangerous rabbit hole of blackmail, murder and youth soccer." Honestly, reminds me of growing up in Jersey.
Before you get all really? on me about this recommendation, allow me to remind you that it stars everyone's second favorite The Office star and first favorite Emily Blunt husband John Krasinski. This time around (aka every time around), the Tom Clancy character is pulled back into the world of spies to help stop a bunch of terrorists. Action scenes and John Krasinski looking adorable ensue.
I'm not gonna call Off Campus the "straight" version of Heated Rivalry (but it might be?!). A star hockey player with abs who happens to lose his shirt a lot strikes up a romance with a music major who (oh no!) hates hockey. Like Heated Rivalry, this brand-new show is based on a book series, meaning we might get to enjoy multiple seasons of hockey players with abs who lose their shirts a lot.
Am I the only one who would watch the Aquaman star do basically anything? In this docuseries, now in its second season, Jason Momoa "travels the country chasing art, adventure, and friendship through the lens of craftsmanship." Unsurprisingly, you had me at "Jason Momoa."
This new HBO documentary film follows stories from across Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities. And it features a number of mega famous faces sharing their stories, including Sandra Oh, Connie Chung, Kumail Nanjiani, Bowen Yang and Senator Tammy Duckworth.
Scandal, sex, affairs, secrets, the gorgeous English countryside...the iconic Scottish actor David Tennant! What doesn't this show have?! Two high-powered...wait for it...rivals battle one another in the world of independent television in the 1980s. And Rivals season two promises to be just as dramatic as the first.
