World Cup Wrap: 5 things to know from Day 12

Lionel Messi broke the World Cup scoring record and then added another goal to his tally as Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 to advance from Group J.

France's match against Iraq was temporarily suspended at the end of the first half because of bad weather. FIFA said the match had entered "severe weather mode" because of lightning activity near the stadium. At the time of the suspension, France were leading Iraq 1-0 thanks to Kylian Mbappe's third goal of the tournament.

Here's what to know so far on Day 12.

Lionel Messi scored twice to send Argentina into the knockout stages of World Cup 2026 with a 2-0 win over Group J rivals Austria.

But the game will be remembered for Messi's record-breaking day.

The 38-year-old had moved level with Miroslav Klose's mark of 16 goals at the World Cup after his hat-trick in Argentina's opening match.

So with nine minutes played in Monday's (22 June) game in Dallas, the stage was set for Messi to slot home a penalty to break the record. Except he didn't – not yet. The Argentinean, with the world watching, somehow screwed his penalty wide.

The magical moment finally arrived 29 minutes later.

Messi drifted into the middle of the box and calmly stroked Facundo Medina's pass into the bottom corner.

The record had been broken but there was still time for Messi to add to it. Who knows how long Messi's record will stand with the much younger Frenchman Kylian Mbappe hot on his heels?

This time, Messi's goal was a scrappy one. Argentina's Julian Alvarez had an effort saved and the ball was played back into the area for Messi to convert for his fifth goal of the tournament deep into stoppage time.

"It feels special, but like I've always said it does," Messi said.

When asked which of his 18 World Cup goals was his favourite, Messi replied: "I can't recall right now, I'm tired, low on energy, and finding it hard to think."

"I get emotional watching him now," Xavi Hernandez said in a tribute piece to his former Barcelona team-mate Messi for The Athletic.

Xavi revealed that he had messaged Messi after the Argentinean's hat-trick against Algeria.

"I told him that he was a joke, that I could only laugh when I saw what he had done. It was crazy, crazy stuff," Xavi said. "But that's Leo. He always turns up at just the right moment. For me, he's incomparable. Incomparable. Almost inhuman."

The midfield legend went on to describe Messi as the Michael Jordan of football. "He has surpassed the greats of the past because of his longevity: he's been the best for the last 20 years," Xavi said.

Argentina's head coach Lionel Scaloni admitted Messi's continued heroics have left him speechless.

"I have no words to talk about Leo, it makes us all a bit tired," Scaloni noted.

Mohamed Salah cut a frustrated and grumpy figure for Liverpool this season so it was nice to see the 34-year-old find some joy at the World Cup.

Salah was filmed dancing in the streets of Vancouver with fans after leading Egypt to their first-ever World Cup win.

"We just wanted to do our best in this tournament to make the people of Egypt happy, and I think they are happy right now and proud," Salah said after defeating New Zealand 3-1 on Day 11.

"The only thing I can promise them is that we will sweat, we will run and we will give it our best," he added.

Congratulations to new dad Jeremy Doku

In the end, all the controversy and column inches were for nothing.

Belgium winger Jeremy Doku flew to London to attend the birth of his son – and is expected to rejoin the team's World Cup camp on Tuesday night before their final group game.

He didn't miss a game. The world didn't stop spinning. And he got to witness the birth of his first child.

Doku had previously been at the centre of a media firestorm after a French TV host criticised his desire to leave the tournament to attend the birth of his child.
