World Cup Wrap: 4 things to know from Day 11
Lamine Yamal scored his first World Cup goal as Spain cruised past Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Group H. Also in Group H, Uruguay were held to a 2-2 draw by Cape Verde in another shock result by the minnows.
Elsewhere, Iran secured a goalless draw against the 10-men of Belgium in Group G.
In the day's final match, Egypt rallied from a goal down to beat New Zealand 3-1 and claim their first-ever World Cup win.
Here's what to know from Day 11.
Lamine Yamal gets Spain on track
Lamine Yamal scored after just 10 minutes on his first World Cup start in a rampant 4-0 win for Spain over Group H rivals Saudi Arabia.
Spain, who were famously held goalless by Cape Verde in their opening match, found the goals against Saudi with Yamal's tap-in and Mikel Oyarzabal's double easing them to a 3-0 lead before half-time.La Roja were intense and aggressive, Spain were Spain again. "The ball ran," Spain boss Luis de la Fuente said.
The Saudis conceded again just four minutes after half-time as Marc Cucurella's volley from a corner was parried by Mohammed Al-Owais onto Hassan Al-Tombakti for an agonising own goal.
Ferran Torres had a late goal ruled out by VAR, leaving Spain to settle for the 4-0 victory.
"We wanted to get our groove back, but today also showed us there's still room to improve," De la Fuente said.
The day's other match from Group H saw Uruguay and Cape Verde play out a thrilling 2-2 draw.
Kevin Pina fired Cape Verde into the lead with an outstanding direct free kick in the 21st minute for his nation's first ever World Cup goal.
Uruguay hit back with two quick-fire goals before half-time, from Maxi Araujo and Agustin Canobbio.
Cape Verde grabbed an equaliser in the 61st minute through Helio Varela who capitalised on awful Uruguayan defending.
"We are here to compete and achieve a new dream, which is to qualify for the second round," said the Cape Verde head coach, Bobista.
Iran frustrate Belgium in stalemate
Nathan Ngoy was sent off as Iran frustrated 10-man Belgium to a goalless draw in Los Angeles in Group G.
The Belgium defender was dismissed after 66 minutes when he brought down Mehdi Taremi, preventing the Iranian from intercepting his poor backpass.
Taremi had earlier put the the ball into the back of the net from an inventive Iranian free-kick routine. Ehsan Hajisafi shaped to shoot but instead played a pass to Taremi, who was in the Belgium wall, and he rolled the ball past Thibaut Courtois – but the first half effort was ruled out for offside by VAR.
Belgium should have been in front minutes before Ngoy's implosion.
Kevin De Bruyne pulled the ball back for Maxim De Cuyper to fire but his effort was somehow kept out by the outstretched arms of Alireza Beiranvand.
"They could have won, we could have won, but I want to thank our goalkeeper, Alireza Beiranvand, who had a fantastic day," Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei said.
Salah delivers first World Cup win for Egypt
Egypt have emerged as surprise leaders in Group after two rounds following a 3-1 win over New Zealand.
New Zealand opened the scoring in the 14th minute through Finn Surman's header from corner.
Egypt levelled in the 58th minute through Mostafa Ziko in an entertaining end-to-end game for neutrals.
And then it was left for Mo Salah to inspire a famous come-from-behind win.
Salah played a one-two with Ziko before firing a low shot past keeper Max Crocombe in the 67th minute.
With eight minutes remaining, the Liverpool legend then set-up substitute Mahmoud Trezeguet for his team's third to send Egypt top of Group G.
Jeremy Doku's World Cup paternity leave controversy
Belgium winger Jeremy Doku has found himself embroiled in World Cup controversy.
The crime? The 24-year-old wants to leave the tournament to witness the birth of his first child.
"The baby could arrive before the end of the tournament," Doku said. "I would like to be there."
He added: "No father would want to miss that. I know that the federation is aware and we will see what we can do."
French TV presenter France Pierron said it would be a "disgusting moment" and claimed the father is "completely useless" during their child's birth. She has since apologised for her comments.
However, England international Ollie Watkins, who is a father of two, has defended Doku: "Someone labelled it 'disgusting'. For a start, that's not a way to label a birth."
Doku's wife Shireen is due to give birth during second week of July which could potentially see the player miss a key match.
