Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) stock slid over 2% in Tuesday premarket trading as investors balanced strong AI-driven memory demand against tariff uncertainty and a softer broader market backdrop ahead of the company’s quarterly earnings.
Nasdaq futures are down 1.23% while S&P 500 futures have shed 0.65%.
AI Demand Keeps Memory Supply Tight
Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) recently pointed to a strong growth outlook, while former Nvidia executive Jeff Herbst said AI computing demand continues to outpace memory supply.
Herbst said Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (OTC:SSNLF), SK Hynix Inc. (NASDAQ:SKHY) and Micron are operating at capacity.
He noted that new fabrication plants take years to build, which he expects will keep memory prices elevated.
Herbst also said Nvidia has secured long-term supply agreements with all three major memory manufacturers.
Trump Praises Micron As Tariff Risks Build
President Donald Trump is considering new semiconductor tariffs that could extend to laptops, gaming consoles and data center servers. Technology companies have warned that such measures could raise costs and slow AI infrastructure expansion.
At the same time, Trump praised Micron’s new $10 billion U.S. research investment, calling the company one of the "hottest" in the world.
He highlighted that investment alongside Micron’s earlier $250 billion commitment to domestic manufacturing and said the company is helping keep the U.S. at the forefront of AI and advanced computing.
Micron is also the only U.S.-based manufacturer of high-bandwidth memory, which the administration views as important to domestic AI supply-chain security.
