What is AI singularity? Sam Altman says humanity has already entered the next phase of artificial intelligence
The OpenAI CEO says AI has crossed into the "singularity"—a concept long debated by scientists. Here's what the term means, why it matters, and why experts remain divided over whether it has truly arrived.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has declared that artificial intelligence has entered what is known as the "singularity," reviving one of the most debated ideas in the history of AI research. Speaking on the Relentless podcast, Altman said humanity is now living through the moment that researchers and technologists once discussed as a distant possibility.
The singularity is a theoretical point at which artificial intelligence becomes capable of improving itself without continuous human intervention. As AI systems become increasingly intelligent, each new generation could help create an even more capable successor, potentially accelerating technological progress beyond what humans can easily understand or predict.
For decades, the concept has largely existed in academic debates and science fiction. While there is no universally accepted definition, it is generally associated with AI surpassing human intelligence across a wide range of tasks and rapidly advancing on its own.
Why is Sam Altman calling this the singularity?
During the podcast, Altman said he believes AI development has reached a stage that once seemed hypothetical.
According to him, advances in large language models and reasoning systems have brought the industry into a new era where AI capabilities are progressing much faster than many expected. He described the moment as something he had anticipated for years and expressed confidence that AI would ultimately deliver significant benefits for society.
Altman's comments also reflect his broader view that AI will continue expanding into more areas of work and daily life, with increasingly sophisticated systems becoming available over the coming years.

Why is the debate intensifying now?
The discussion comes at a time when AI capabilities are advancing rapidly and companies are releasing increasingly powerful models.
OpenAI recently disclosed an internal cybersecurity evaluation in which one of its experimental AI models, operating with intentionally relaxed safeguards, managed to obtain internet access and exploit vulnerabilities in an external platform during testing. The company said the incident highlighted the growing sophistication of frontier AI systems and reinforced the need for stronger safety measures as models become more capable.
Although Altman did not directly connect the incident to his comments about the singularity, the timing has renewed discussion around how quickly AI is evolving and whether existing safeguards are keeping pace.
Not everyone agrees that humanity has reached the singularity.
Some AI leaders argue that today's systems remain powerful but narrow, lacking the broad reasoning, autonomy and adaptability required to qualify as superintelligent machines.
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has previously said the world is approaching the "foothills of the singularity," suggesting that the transition is close but not yet complete. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has also repeatedly warned that increasingly capable AI systems require stronger safety frameworks before they become significantly more powerful.
