Westbound Highway 402 section closed for ‘extended period’ due to unsafe road conditions: OPP

Plympton-Wyoming closure in place since Wednesday afternoon, police say

Highway 402 westbound has been closed between Oil Heritage Road and Mandaumin Road in the Municipality of Plympton-Wyoming, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Canada Day OPP officers responded to a report of unsafe road conditions on the highway and closed the westbound lanes, provincial police said in a news release.

Early Thursday morning Const. Chris Ciliska told CBC Windsor that the affected section of the highway is “expected to be closed for [an] extended period for resurfacing.” He said there was a similar closure last summer in same area.

Police are advising westbound motorists to exit at Oil Heritage Road and detour following London Line to Mandaumin Road to re-enter the highway.

Motorists should plan an alternative route and allow for extra travel time.

Police have not said if the closure is related to the heat wave affecting Sarnia and several other areas this week.

An orange-level heat warning is in effect for Sarnia Thursday.

Environment Canada said the hottest conditions are expected to continue through today, with maximum temperatures of 35 to 37 C expected.

Minimum temperatures of 21 to 25 C will provide little relief from the heat, the agency said.

CBC News has reached out to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation for information about the closure and the expected time of reopening.
