West Bengal Leads India's First Digital Census Initiative
West Bengal is gearing up for Census 2027, emphasizing digital technology and citizen involvement. The state aims to enhance data accuracy and governance amidst its unique demographic landscape. The initiative includes online self-enumeration and innovative digital tools, making the participation process more efficient and inclusive.
In a landmark move, the Government of West Bengal is preparing for Census 2027 with an unprecedented focus on digital technology, citizen participation, and data accuracy. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced this during a press conference in Kolkata, highlighting that the Census is a constitutional obligation crucial for informed policymaking.
The state cabinet approved the necessary arrangements on May 11, 2026, underscoring the exercise's importance given West Bengal's extensive international border. Scheduled to begin in August 2026, with a reference date of March 1, 2027, the Census will, for the first time, allow citizens to digitally self-enumerate online, marking a significant shift in procedural efficiency.
The two-phase self-enumeration process will feature a host of digital platforms, including a dedicated Self-Enumeration Portal and mobile apps, making participation seamless. Officials anticipate improved data accuracy and faster processing through this framework, enhancing public involvement and facilitating better governance amid West Bengal's unique demographic challenges.
