Watch: Australian city attempts world record for largest trombone ensemble

July 14 (UPI) -- An Australian city gathered more than 600 musicians to play trombones together and break a Guinness World Record.

The City of Ipswich, Queensland, hosted the attempt to break the record for the largest trombone ensemble as part of the SPARK Ipswich Arts Festival.

The trombonists who performed "76 Trombones" from The Music Man included representatives from schools, bands and orchestras from across Queensland and beyond.

The attempt was organized by Ipswich City Big Band Music Director Matt Chambers.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said evidence from the attempt is now being submitted to Guinness World Records for official verification.

"To see hundreds of musicians of all skill levels in Tulmur Place ready to try and set a new world record is an extraordinary achievement and one that every participant, volunteer and supporter can be incredibly proud of," Harding said.

"This record attempt was about much more than numbers. It was about showcasing the power of music in a city that embraces culture, supports local talent and delivers unique experiences to bring people together."

The current record of 368 trombone players was set in Washington, D.C., in 2012.
